“Live Fossil” kakheti, Georgia

How can you observe a winemaking tradition as ancient as known history itself? How do you funnel the intense character and passionate pride that Georgian people take in their wines? You need to make Georgian wine in the way it was made thousands of years ago, in the same place with the same vessels. Pheasant’s Tears in Kakheti do just that: 100% local red variety, Saperavi, is raised and aged in special Amphora tanks sunk into the ground called Qvevri (k’vevri). In our eyes, it is one of the best red wines you’ll find on our website, and in general. A dark purple almost black colour, it is a generous natural wine with very ripe aromas and an explosive palate that fills the mouth with fruity, lively earthy flavours. It is extremely fresh with good structure and tannins, do not expect a heavy wine. We recommend opening the bottle at least 1-2 hours before drinking and serving lightly chilled (around 16-18 C). Enjoy with roast leg of lamb or rich meaty casseroles.

INFO ON GROWER

The Pheasant’s Tear’s estate in Kakheti is run by John Wurdeman and Gela Patalishvili. John is an American painter who first came to Georgia in 1996, and the following year bought a house in Sighnaghi. In 1998 he relocated to Georgia full time. Gela is a winegrower whose family’s connection with wine goes back eight generations. The two met in 2005 when John was painting in a vineyard, and decided to work together. “Pheasant’s Tears was born out of a love of authentic tradition, and culture and endless creativity. It is more than a winery it’s about songs, cuisine, art, heritage tangible and intangible. For wine is born out of a confluence of the spirit of a place, its geology, its history, and the emotions of the vintner himself. In the end dialogue between nature and man, a fine tension between respect for the past and creating a new experience for tomorrow. Traditions here are seen as the nourishing soul for improvisation and respectful evolution.”

1 review for Saperavi 2019

If l never drank another wine for the rest of my life and only drank Pheasant’s Tears, I would be happy. It’s almost indescribable..soft and fruity, earthy and warm, notes of blackberry. Nothing I can say does it justice. We were speechless. We bought a mixed case of my own selections, having read the descriptions of each, and this one outshone everything else we picked. I just want to get my hands on an unending supply.
