Voyage En Terre Géorgienne 2019

“A Journey To Orange Heavan” IGP Coteaux Beziers (Languedoc) , France

£26.20 a bottle

Marcel Gisclard was one of the first winemakers in France to visit Georgia (The world’s first to use Amphora) and understand their methods of winemaking and ageing. He produced this Languedoc Orange (skin contact) wine using his favourite grape variety, the rare Carignan blanc, and to say it was a success is a woeful understatement. The colour is somewhere between orange wine and rosé. The aromas are fine and complex with marinated raisin with rum, dried banana, and a very slight resinous touch. It keeps evolving with aeration. The palate is well structured, airy with ripe, rich matter, followed by a wave of freshness that prevents it from falling into heaviness. The balance is really close to perfection. The finish is powerful without being aggressive, tasty at the limit of the jubilatory – lingering long on dried apricot aromas mixed with quince and resin.

INFO ON GROWER

Domaine Emile et Rose is located in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon at the small village of Corneilhan, close to Béziers. Caroline and Marcel Gisclard took over the family vineyard in 2004 which they inherited from their grandparents. In order to pay tribute to them, the estate was named Émile et Rose, the first names of the ancestors of the family.

The vineyard is made up of plots in small hillsides, of low yield, where very old vines of Carignan, Aramon, Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz) and cabernet sauvignon rub shoulders.

Here, we are in organic farming since the very beginning and they produce excellent micro-cuvées. Marcel is also known as one of the pioneers of orange wine in France; he was one of the first to visit Georgia to understand and learn their winemaking and ageing in amphora. The harvest is manual, natural vinification and ageing is done in barrels and amphora.
