A juicy, pure and very lively expression of Gamay by Nathalie Banes, a rising talent in the natural wine sphere, based at the overlooked region of Southern Beaujolais (Village of Oignt to be exact). La Saoulée 2021 brings together all of Nathalie’s plots including those that were previously reserved for the more expensive Tiki collection. Made in semi carbonic maceration, the nose is expressive, loaded with fresh, ripe cherry and violet. The palate is direct yet with great little nuance of complexity that make it stand out from the crowd. We recommend serving it fairly chilled (30-40 minutes in the fridge) and drinking it one sitting.
Initially smokey and damp on the nose, reminiscent of fresh woodchips or your local B&Q/Homebase. Floral and fruity tones coming out after it sits in the glass a while, but the underlying funk remains. Almost tastes like a blend of a beaujolais and a barolo chinato with its floral and herbal notes. Not for me but would recommend to those who enjoy a funky natural red.
