A juicy, pure and very lively expression of Gamay by Nathalie Banes, a rising talent in the natural wine sphere, based at the overlooked region of Southern Beaujolais (Village of Oignt to be exact). La Saoulée 2021 brings together all of Nathalie's plots including those that were previously reserved for the more expensive Tiki collection. Made in semi carbonic maceration, the nose is expressive, loaded with fresh, ripe cherry and violet. The palate is direct yet with great little nuance of complexity that make it stand out from the crowd. We recommend serving it fairly chilled (30-40 minutes in the fridge) and drinking it one sitting.
Nathalie Banes is a natural winegrower based in Légny, a commune in the southern part of the Beaujolais region, France. She cultivates approximately 2.5 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Gamay vines that are around 35 years old. Embracing sustainable viticulture, Nathalie works closely with her Comtois draft horse, Hulot, to manage the vineyards without the use of herbicides or pesticides.
In the cellar, Nathalie adheres to a philosophy of minimal intervention. Her winemaking process involves whole-cluster maceration in stainless steel tanks, with manual punch-downs conducted twice daily over a period of 7 to 10 days. The wines are neither filtered nor fined, and no sulphur is added at any stage. This approach results in wines that are expressive, vibrant, and true to their terroir.
Nathalie Banes' commitment to natural winemaking and respect for traditional methods make her a noteworthy producer within the Beaujolais region.
